Bible bits
This song is based on 1 Peter 3 v 18
The Bible reminds us that we all sin. Romans 3 v 23 says, ‘All have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God.’ It means that by ourselves we are not good enough; we could never reach God’s standards. At times we all think, say or do wrong things. Sometimes we have a bad attitude or we’re selfish and do things our way, ignoring or rejecting God.
Did you know?
The word ‘sin’ comes from the sport of archery. When an arrow was fired from the bow it was said to have ‘sinned’ when it fell short and missed the target.
Jesus took our place
God loves us but has to judge sin. We are guilty of sinning and we deserve to be punished for our sins. The punishment for sin is death. But when Jesus died on the cross He died in our place and He took our punishment for us. He did it for us so we didn’t have to. Jesus was innocent – He’d never sinned – but He died for us so that by faith in Jesus and what He did for us we could be God’s friends again.
Read about it in Rom 3 v 22 - 24
The bridge
Sin separates us from God and spoils our friendship with Him.
Imagine two hills with steep drops and a huge deep valley in between them. It’s like we are on one side. We are unholy. God is on the other side. God is holy. No amount of doing good things can get us from one side to the other. All our efforts just fall short and end up in the bottom of the valley. Now imagine Jesus dying on the cross for you. The cross forms a bridge across from one side to the other! By trusting and believing in Jesus and what He has done for you, you can now walk across the ‘bridge’ He made for you to God on the other side.
Where are you?
You could draw that picture on paper. Where would you put yourself in the picture?
Are you stood next to God already? Great – thank God for being your friend.
Are you on the other side still just thinking about it all and perhaps trying to be friends with God by doing good things? God loves you and wants a real friendship with you.
Or would you like to trust in Jesus and cross that bridge, become a Christian and have a real friendship with God for ever?
If you would like to do that here is a prayer you can pray… read it through first to make sure it’s really want you want to say to God. You can add you own words as well if you want – like anything particular that God is reminding you of to say sorry for.
Prayer
Dear God,
I’m sorry for the wrong things I do. Thank you for sending Jesus to take the punishment for these things, so that I can be your friend. Please come into my life and fill me with your Holy Spirit. Help me to get to know you as a friend and to live your way.
Amen
If you prayed that prayer and really meant it, God has forgiven you and you are now a Christian!
1 John 1 v 9 says, ‘But if we confess our sins, he will forgive our sins. We can trust God. He does what is right. He will make us clean from all the wrongs we have done.’
Tell it!
Now write you own prayer to God telling Him how you feel.
It’s a great idea to tell another Christian what you’ve done so they can encourage you – I’d love it if you emailed me too!
