Your Word
When the Bible talks about God’s ‘word’ it means the words written in the Bible. In some places the Bible also mentions ‘the Word’ with a capital ‘W’ – that means Jesus. But it’s what’s written in the Bible that we are looking at this week.
Psalm 119 is the longest Psalm in Bible. It tells us we will be blessed if we live like His word tells us to. To do that we have to know what God’s word says!
A lamp to my feet...
Imagine walking on a dark path without any light at all. You walk slowly and tread cautiously not knowing where you next step might lead you. You feel very uncertain.
Now imagine a bright light above you, like a street lamp, and a powerful torch in your hand. Now you can see where the path goes ahead of you and you can see where to put your feet. You feel more sure and confident.
Life can be like that dark path, difficult to walk and stay on track but if we read the Bible, take it in and let it guide the way we live then we’ve got God’s light to show us the way.
Email challenge
The writer of Psalm 119 described God’s word as a lamp and a light to show him the way.
How many different sorts of light can you think of that God’s word is like and why?
Fill in the blanks ‘Your word is like a _____________ because _______________.’
Here’s an example ‘Your word is like a lighthouse because it keeps me away from danger.’
I’d love to see what you can come up with!
Read it today!
The Bible encourages us to meditate on God’s word – meditate means to think about something deeply.
Next time you read the Bible, before you start:
- ask the Holy Spirit to help you understand what it means
- ask God to show you what He wants to say to you today (from what you read)
Then take time to think and ask God:
- What did it mean at the time it was written?
- What does it mean for me today?
- How can I put it into practice?
- Is there anything that has to change in my life so I can live more like God wants me to?
I’m reading through the Psalms at the moment. If you’ve not read the Bible much before a great place to start is one of the first four books in the New Testament, like John.
Try reading small chunks of it and take time to listen to God too. A great idea is to keep a special book and write down or draw in it what he says to you!
I’d love to hear what God’s been saying to you as you read his word.
This book is alive!
God’s word is so useful for us – check out 2 Timothy 3 verses 16 and 17 and Hebrews 4 verse 12 in the Bible to see how useful it is!
God’s word is alive because it has power to make a difference to our lives and the way we live our lives.
God uses it to:-
- say things to us when we read it
- teach us about God
- give us wisdom and understanding
- affect how we feel about ourselves, others and God
- tell us where we are going wrong so we can say sorry
- help us to know how to do things the right way
plus lots more ways!
See how many more ways you can think of or discover in the Bible! There are lots of them in Psalm 119!
