Luke

Luke 11v1

One day Jesus was praying... When he had finished, one of his disciples said to him, "Lord, teach us to pray."

The disciples new that Jesus was there example to follow.  They went to him when they wanted to learn how they should pray.  Jesus is still our example today, and we should also go to him when we want to learn to pray.  The bible tells us of many times when Jesus prayed, from this we can when to pray, why we pray, where to pray and what to pray for.

Luke 11v2-4

Jesus said to them, "When you pray, say this:
Father:
May your holy name be honoured;
May your kingdom come.
Give us day by day the food we need.
Forgive us our sins,
  for we forgive everyone who does us wrong.
And do not bring us to hard testing.'"

Jesus taught his disciples how to pray, and we should pray in a similar way.

Jesus said that we should praise God and pray that Jesus will return to rule the world.  We can asked God for our daily needs.  We should ask for Gods forgiveness and also we need to forgive people who have hurt us.  We should also pray to God for his help and protection.

Luke 11v5-8

Jesus said to his disciples, "Suppose one of you should go to a friends house at midnight and say to him 'Friend let me borrow three loaves of bread.  A friend of mine who is on a journey has come to my house and I haven't got any food for him!'  And suppose your friend should answer from inside, 'Don't bother me!  The door is already locked and my children are already in bed.  I can't get up and give you anything.'  Well what then?  I tell you that even if he will not get up and give you the bread because you are a friend, yet he will get up and give you everything you need because you are not ashamed to keep on asking."

We should not expect all our prayers to be answered straight away.  Sometimes God wants us to keep on praying the same pray over and over to show him that we really mean what we pray.
